Hey DM or anybody: I have caught you guys using this term hereabouts, but I don't recall reading it in the media during the 80s & 90s, nor hearing it from the few fans I associated with during my hiatus from the band...

Was this really a BIG nickname for him? Clearly this bumper sticker suggests so, but if I saw it then, I wouldn't have known who it was about...

That sticker came around on the '85 spring tour.
Never cared for it myself. The only place I've ever heard anyone call Jerry "the fat man" was on this forum.

My favorite was probably the old square "i'm with phil"

Well, it was really when Jerry had gotten kind of big and people were noticing. I had a 72 VW Bus with a 4x4 for a back bumper with nothing on it. I don't usually like to identify myself by drawing too much attention, I figured Gus the Bus did enough of that. I was coming out of the Greek shows in '85 still reeling from how fantastic Jerry was and was thinking that he still has it even though he was seeming a bit unhealthy. When I came down the stairs to the street thinking all this I looked up and there was a guy holding that bumper sticker up in the air. All of a sudden the crowd vanished and it was just me, the guy and the bumper sticker. I was drawn to it because it was glowing with a golden halo and I knew that THIS was the bumper sticker I had been waiting for. As I held the sticker in my hand, staring at it, smiling and walking down the street, I heard a voice come from somewhere behind me saying, "Hey! You gonna pay for that or what?" So I handed the messenger a one-dollar bill as I patted him on the shoulder saying "off you go now" and went back to my rapt attention on the bumper sticker. When I got to Gus the Bus I could tell he knew something was up, I think he was actually smiling. I showed him the bumper sticker and told him to assume the position. He did so gladly and willingly and I think he let out a little "ahhhhh" as I pasted his new ornament on. Got a lot of comments but not from Deadheads. I liked it though.

Ah, great story! Sorta "me and my arrow" except it's a bus...

Yeah, and Mike Lookinland wasn't in it.
